| 5 km (3,1 miles) from Cherbourg, the Castle and the Park of Martinvast are both privately owned listed historic monuments. In this enchanting setting, the three parts of the Castle create an harmonious whole and testify to the rich past of the place. The 11th century keep is linked in an elegant way, by an Neogothic construction of the 19th century, with the surviving wing of the old 16th century Castle. The whole is surrounded by English-style parkland with meadows, woods, ponds, waterfalls and features such as an 18th century obelisk. Sumptuous clumps of tree-like rhododendrons and gunneras grow in the shade of exotic conifers in the Reserved Garden which also boasts flowering shrubs (Hydrangeas, Camellias, Magnolias, Andromedas, Kalmias...). |
